A German-made one, not Westmoreland. Surprising to see a cheap  40 year old German car here in the rust belt; even the old Benzes are rusted through.

Is that outside a Target?

Sort of. It was actually  in the Costco lot; Target’s a bit further away.

Did you change your text from English to German, or am I just thinking in German again?

I chanted it, but I thought I changed it before anybody noticed.

OK, that makes sense.

There have been times when studying foreign languages that I know I’m getting fluent when I start thinking in that language internally. I was finding it quite odd for that to be happening now because I haven't been studying German lately.

Have you ever read Le Ton beau de Marot by Douglas Hofstadter? It’s all about translation, language fluency, machine translation, etc. It’s a bit esoteric at times, and it’s been 20 years since I read it. But it was a good intellectual exercise, and if you do lots of translating, I recommend it.

My car came to Ohio from Texas some time after 2012 (that’s the year on the last sticker that I can’t get off the windshield). Six years are beginning to take their toll. Rust and old iron are no joke.

I’m not familiar with that piece, but I am definitely going to look that up when I get home. I’ve recently downloaded Goe del, Escher, Bach and want to re-read it; it’s been about three decades since I first read it, and I don’t think I got as much or of it as I could . I have no idea where my print copy is; I never set up my library after moving six years ago, so ebook it is...

Diesel or gas? Likely a ‘79, so available w/ a 5 speed or 4 speed manual, or a slushbox. Waiting list back then, so you had to take what they gave you.

I didn’t actually get close enough to check transmission . I saw it as I was about to leave the parking lot, caught it out the corner of my eye and zoomed in for a quick shot.

I’m going to guess that it’s a ‘78; 1979 would have been the first of the Westmoreland-built models and would have had the vertical side markers and rectangular headlights. I was a big WC VW fan back in the day; mom drove a ‘77 Dasher wagon (my first car) and I wanted a facelift Scirocco Mk1 (but bought a 1983.5 Rabbit GTI instead). I helped a couple of friends buy and modify Mk1 Rabbits, all German, including a cool Champagne Edition Rabbit in Inari Silver - loved that car.

I gave GEB a good effort, but got bogged down about 2/3 of the way through.

I can empathize - it’s a tough read from what I remember . Hopefully Le Ton beau de Marot won’t be quite as taxing.

Well, it’s been close to 20 years since I read Marot , and I’m not sure I finished that, either. Good luck!

Located by that grey marker, so a little telephoto compression on the zoom.

Could be a 79 diesel, too, looks like a lot of those were still German.

Yeah, I think you’re right about that. If I  see it again I ’ll take a closer look.

My mom & dad had a ‘79 Rabbit as our family car back in the early 80's, exact same color, exact same body style. Three speed auto wasn’t the best, but it was a fun, decent little car. My older sister killed it when she re-ended a Chevy Nova. Replaced it with an ‘86 Golf.

Yeah - all the diesels at that point ver CHERMAN - gas models shifted (almost said shitted) over to the PA product.
